La confirmación de un tercer jugador de la NBA que ha dado positivo al coronavirus, el joven ala-pívot de 24 años, Christian Wood, de los Pistons de Detroit, convirtió la decisión del comisionado de la NBA, Adam Silver, de suspender la competición, en algo cada vez más trascendental.
Sobre todo porque Wood fue uno de los jugadores del equipo de Detroit que se había enfrentado al pívot francés Rudy Gobert, de los Jazz de Utah, el primer profesional de la NBA, que el pasado miércoles por la noche, dio positivo al coronavirus que desarrolla la enfermedad del covid-19, convertida en una pandemia, que se ha cobrado ya la vida de 5 mil 865 personas a través de todo el mundo, incluidas 63 en Estados Unidos.
Wood anotó 30 puntos con los Pistons, quienes, el sábado de la pasada semana, perdieron por 111-105 ante los Jazz.
Según los datos estadísticos del partido, Wood y Gobert se enfrentaron en el campo 63 veces en ese partido. Con 5:51 minutos para el final hubo una confrontación entre los dos y en la que el escolta-alero de los Pistons, Bruce Brown, también estuvo involucrado.
Gobert se convirtió en el primer jugador de la NBA en dar positivo por el coronavirus poco antes del inicio del partido del miércoles, en Oklahoma City, ante el equipo local de los Thunder, que fue suspendido minutos antes que se hiciese el salto inicial.
Silver, nada más recibir la notificación de los resultados positivos de Gobert, no dudo ni un instante en decidir la suspensión, que ha sido considerada ejemplar y el modelo a seguir por el resto de la ligas profesionales en Estados Unidos, donde todas las competiciones deportivas están suspendidos, incluida la del baloncesto universitario masculino y femenino.
Un día después de haberse dado la suspensión, otro jugador de los Jazz, el escolta Donovan Mitchell, confirmaba a través de las redes sociales que también estaba contagiado con el coronavirus y en cuarentena.
Se esperaba que los equipos que jugaron contra los Jazz, recientemente, incluidos los Pistons, Wizards de Washington, Cavaliers de Cleveland, Knicks de Nueva York y Celtics de Boston, se autoaislaran al menos este fin de semana.
Los Raptors de Toronto, los actuales campeones de la NBA, el último equipo en jugar contra los Jazz, esta semana, el pasado lunes, en Salt Lake City, ya se sometieron a los pruebas del coronavirus y todos sus integrantes, menos uno, dieron negativo.
Hasta el momento se desconoce porque queda un resultado pendiente y de que jugador, entrenador o directivo de los Raptors se trata.
Lo anterior confirmó que de no haberse dado la suspensión inmediata, el contagio entre los jugadores de la NBA podría haber sido de incalculables consecuencias tanto de salud, deportivas y económicas.
«Hemos tomado el control de la situación, aunque todo es muy cambiante, algo sobre lo que trabajaremos durante el tiempo que estemos sin jugar de cara a tomar la mejor decisión para el futuro», destacó Silver, el pasado jueves, en la única entrevista ofrecida después que ordenó la suspensión de la competición.
Por su parte, el comisionado de la Liga Nacional de Hockey sobre Hielo (NHL), Gary Bettman, discípulo del fallecido ex comisionario de la NBA, David Stern, dijo que la decisión de Silver fue la «ideal» y la que le marcó de inmediato el camino a seguir ordenando también la suspensión de la competición dentro de su organización.
Este domingo, los jugadores de la NBA tienen previsto cobrar sus cheques normales de pago que les corresponden de acuerdo al convenio salarial que está establecido.
Mientras varios jugadores de la NBA, entre ellos el propio Gobert, han comenzado a hacer donaciones a los fondos que puedan ayudar a los trabajadores temporales que han perdido sus trabajos en los campos donde se disputan los partidos.
Gobert ha donado 500 mil dólares para ayudar a los empleados del «Vivint Smart Home Arena», de Salt Lake City, y a los servicios sociales relacionados con covid-19 en Utah, Oklahoma City y dentro del sistema de atención médica francés.
La donación de Gobert se dividirá de la siguiente manera: 200 mil para empleados a tiempo parcial en el «Vivint Smart Home Arena»; 100 mil para familias en Utah y 100 mil para familias en Oklahoma City afectadas por el coronavirus; y 100 mil euros para el sistema de salud en Francia.
Antes de la donación de Gobert, el ala-pivote Kevin Love, de los Cavaliers, también otorgó 100 mil para ayudar a los trabajadores que se han quedado en Cleveland sin empleo por la suspensión de los partidos.
Luego le siguieron el ala-pívot griego Giannis Antetokoumpo, de los Bucks de Milwaukee, que también donó 100 mil dólares para los trabajadores de Milwaukee y el pivote novato Zion Williamson, de los Pelicans de Nueva Orleans, quien se comprometió a pagar durante los próximos 30 días los salarios de los trabajadores del Smoothie King Center.
Otro hombre alto, el ala-pivote Blake Griffin, de los Pistons, se comprometió, vía Twitter, a donar 100 mil a los trabajadores del campo de su equipo, el Little Caesar.
