Stephen Strasburg se quedará en Washington, con un contrato sin precedentes, al acordar este lunes por siete años y 245 millones de dólares.

Strasburg, el Jugador Más Valioso de la Serie Mundial, recibió el mayor acuerdo de la historia para un pitcher, tanto en términos de dólares como en valor anual promedio (35 millones).

El contrato más cuantioso para un lanzador era el de 217 millones de dólares y siete años que David Price firmó con Boston a partir de 2016.

El de Strasburg, de 31 años, se trata del primer contrato significativo anunciado en las reuniones invernales de esta semana.

El mayor valor promedio correspondía al trato por 34.4 millones que Zack Greinke alcanzó con Arizona antes de la campaña de 2016, como parte de un pacto por seis temporadas y 206.5 millones.

«No habríamos ganado la Serie Mundial de 2019 ni logrado todo lo que hemos conseguido en estas últimas 10 temporadas si no fuera por las muchas contribuciones de Stephen», recalcó el dueño de los Nacionales, Mark Lerner.

Strasburg recibirá 35 millones de dólares anuales, con 80 millones diferidos, a razón de unos 11.4 millones anuales. El dinero diferido se pagará de 2028 a 2030.
