Luego de casi cuatro horas de reunión entre los representantes del sindicato de jugadores y miembros del comité negociador de la NFL el martes en Indianapolis, muchas preguntas quedaron sin resolverse.

Se reunieron para discutir a fondo sus diferencias respecto al nuevo acuerdo laboral aprobado por los dueños la semana pasada. Ambas partes dejaron el hotel sin emitir comentarios, solo el vocero de la NFL Brian McCarthy dijo que: “la reunión solo ha concluido y por respeto al proceso, no daremos más comentarios al respecto en esta ocasión”.

Los miembros del comité ejecutivo de la NFL Player Association votaron 6-5 contra el contrato el viernes, y los 32 representantes de los jugadores pospusieron cualquier acción mientras esperaban una reunión con la liga. Esos representantes también deben votar antes de que todos los miembros de la NFLPA lo hagan.

Eso podría ocurrir esta semana, pero todavía hay asuntos entre ambas partes. El actual acuerdo expira en marzo de 2021, pero los dueños quieren llegar a un nuevo contrato lo antes posible. Eso les permitiría buscar nuevos y más lucrativos derechos de transmisión, con una década de labor asegurada.

Pero los jugadores no parecen tener prisa por aprobar el nuevo acuerdo que ha sido el resultado de 10 meses de negociaciones entre las partes. De hecho, muchos representantes tenían la intención de negociar más el pasado viernes.

Lo más picante es la temporada de 17 semanas. Por años los jugadores se han mostrado firmemente en contra –se remonta a la huelga de 2011 que terminó con el actual acuerdo. Principalmente, los jugadores han citado razones de seguridad para no extender la campaña regular.

Entre los cambios que algunos jugadores quisieran ver, de acuerdo a las fuentes: un incremento en la repartición de las ganancias, una pensión mejorada y eventuales mejoras en las condiciones laborales.

La propuesta también ofrece un incremento de 90 mil en el salario mínimo, incrementar los pagos durante la temporada baja, expandir la elegibilidad a la pensión, un límite de 16 días en el ‘training camp’ y una obligada mejora en los vestidores de los equipos visitantes.

La expansión de la postemporada añadiendo un equipo por conferencia no es un tema de negociación, pero los dueños prefieren tener un nuevo acuerdo laboral, antes de instituirlo. Sin embargo, podría ocurrir para la temporada que viene; la NFL ha discutido unos playoffs de 14 equipos por años, y el comisionado Roger Goodell desde 2014 ha hablado de que pasará en algún momento.
