Un ex futbolista profesional holandés que jugó para clubes en Portugal, Hungría e Inglaterra fue asesinado a tiros en la última oleada de violencia registrada en Amsterdam, dijo la policía.

El defensor Kelvin Maynard, de 32 años, murió cuando dos asaltantes en una motocicleta abrieron fuego contra su automóvil el miércoles por la noche en un distrito al sureste de la capital holandesa, dijo un comunicado de la policía.

No se dieron detalles por un posible motivo.

Maynard estaba jugando esta temporada para el club holandés de aficionados Alphense Boys. Anteriormente, había estado con el equipo holandés Volendam, el Sporting Clube Olhanense de Portugal, el Kecskemeti TE de Hungría y el británico Burton Albion.

La policía dijo que una investigación está en curso y apeló a testigos del tiroteo para que se presenten.

El asesinato de Maynard se produjo el mismo día en que un destacado abogado holandés, involucrado en un caso contra una pandilla acusada de asesinatos relacionados con drogas, fue abatido a tiros frente a su casa en Amsterdam.

La alarma ha crecido por el crimen en Amsterdam, una ciudad de 800,000 personas donde el uso de drogas recreativas ha sido tolerado por la policía, creando un mundo subterráneo de distribuidores y proveedores que a veces alimenta la violencia.
