El mito ha donado 7,2 millones de dólares para la construcción de dos hospitales en Charlotte: «Apoyo que los jugadores se mojen en temas políticos».

Michael Jordan ha ido aumentando su implicación en causas sociales y su aportación económica para obras benéficas desde que en 2010 se convirtió en propietario principal de Charlotte Hornets, la franquicia NBA de su Carolina del Norte natal, tierra de batallas legendarias del baloncesto universitario (Duke, North Carolina…) pero en la que al equipo profesional le está costando muchísimo tener verdadero arraigo tras una etapa dorada a finales de los 80 y durante los 90.

Jordan, que nació en Wilmington (a algo más de 300 kilómetros de Charlotte), acaba de realizar su última donación para una comunidad con la que cada vez estrecha más lazos. Junto a su familia, el considerado mejor jugador de baloncesto de la historia, ha donado 7,2 millones de dólares para la construcción de dos centros hospitalarios que, se calcula, atenderán solo en los próximos cinco años a 35.000 adulos y niños. Contarán con primeros servicios pero también con dentistas, fisioterapeutas y asistentes sociales. En el acto, un Jordan visiblemente emocionado, provocó risas, lágrimas y aplausos: «Me fui de joven e hice via en otros lugares, como Illinois (hogar de Chicago Bulls) pero sé dónde empezó todo… y no necesito que mi madre me lo recuerde a todas horas. Nunca podrá devolver todo lo que esta comunidad me dio, pero puedo mostrar mi gratitud hacia ella y su gente».

Jordan, que sigue ganando cada año más dinero que cualquier jugador en activo, habló de la significación social de las actuales estrellas de la NBA en un momento muy delicada. La crisis abierta con China ha puesto en cuestión a jugadores como LeBron James, reconocidos por un activismo que muchos culparon a Jordan de no ejercer en su etapa como jugador, cuando se le atribuyó (no hay certeza de que realmente la dijera) la frase «los republicanos también compran zapatillas«. Pero en los últimos tiempos Jordan ha apoyado y recaudado fondos para Barack Obama y ha intervenidos en asuntos de raza, donde ha coincidido con los jugadores actuales: «Cuando jugaba era como si tuviera visión túnel. Era un jugador de baloncesto profesional y no veía más allá. Intentaba simplemente ser el mejor jugador que pudiera llegar a ser. Pero después he tenido más tiempo para entender las cosas que me rodean, ver los problemas y la naturaleza de muchas situaciones. Y he podido dar mi apoyo, con mi voz o mis recursos económicos. Creo que es fantástico lo que hacen los jugadores ahora. Si entienden la raíz de una situación y quiere que se oiga su voz, fantástico. Tienen mi apoyo».
