Las preocupaciones sobre la propagación del coronavirus en China y su impacto en los Juegos Olímpicos de este año en Tokio llegaron a oídos del primer ministro japonés Shinzo Abe este lunes.
Ante las preguntas sobre el virus planteadas por un legislador de la oposición, Abe minimizó las preocupaciones.
«Responderemos apropiadamente», afirmó Abe. «Al mismo trabajaremos estrechamente con la Organización Mundial de la Salud y otros organismos internacionales a fin de seguir adelante con los preparativos sin permitir que eso afecte los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos de Tokio».
Japón no ha reportado muertes debidas a un brote que en China ya ha cobrado más de 300 muertes y ha rebasado los 17 mil casos de personas infectadas.
Los Juegos Olímpicos inician el 24 de julio en la capital japonesa.
Los organizadores del evento y el Comité Olímpico Internacional han señalado que no existen planes para cancelar ni posponer los Juegos. La gobernadora de Tokio, Yurkio Koike, ha advertido sobre las consecuencias de no esforzarse al máximo en las medidas de vigilancia.
El ministro olímpico Seiko Hashimoto dijo que los organizadores de Tokio y representantes de gobiernos municipales se reunirán la próxima semana para discutir las medidas a tomar frente a la amenaza del virus.
Los Juegos Olímpicos modernos, que datan de 1896, han sido cancelados durante periodos de guerra y han enfrentado boicots en 1980 y 1984. En las últimas décadas se han transformado en un evento multimillonario con fuertes inversiones de televisoras y patrocinadores.
Aproximadamente 11 mil deportistas competirán en los Juegos de Tokio. Muchos de ellos aún no logran su clasificación y podrían tener ante ellos el problema de que los eventos de clasificación sean cancelados o pospuestos si el coronavirus sigue propagándose fuera de China.
