Francisco “Paquín” Estrada, el mánager mexicano que ganó dos Series del Caribe con los Tomateros de Culiacán, falleció este lunes a los 71 años de edad, después de varios meses aquejado de problemas cardiovasculares.

Los Tomateros informaron en su cuenta de Twitter la muerte de Estrada, quien ganó seis campeonatos de la Liga Mexicana del Pacífico con el equipo “guinda” al que llevó a los títulos de la Serie del Caribe en 1996 y 2002.

Estrada, nacido en Navojoa, fue un receptor de gran defensa tanto en la Liga Mexicana de Beisbol como en la del Pacífico.

En la Mexicana, que transcurre en el verano, jugó entre 1966 y 1994 con los Diablos Rojos, los Pericos de Puebla, Los Piratas de Campeche, las Truchas de Toluca, los Bravos de León y los Petroleros de Minatitlán y en el Pacífico vistió a partir de 1964 los uniformes de los Mayos de Navojoa, los Yaquis de Obregón, los Venados de Mazatlán y los Tomateros de Culiacán.

Si bien es recordado por la elegancia de su defensa, su maestría en los elevados de foul y su personalidad para dirigir a los lanzadores, Estrada fue un buen bateador, a pesar de no tener mucho poder.

Tuvo una breve participación con los Mets de Nueva York en las Grandes Ligas y después de su retiro fue uno de los manejadores más respetados del beisbol de México en lo que va de siglo.

Dirigió a México en el primer Clásico de beisbol, en el que la Selección accedió a segunda ronda en la que le ocasionó una costosa derrota al poderoso equipo de Estados Unidos.

Además de ganar seis títulos con los Tomateros, “Paquín” llevó a las Águilas de Mexicali a un campeonato, en 1999, y en la liga de verano conquistó tres cetros, con los Piratas de Campeche, en 1993; los Bravos de León, en 1990 y los Piratas de Campeche, en 2004.

Forma parte del Salón de la fama del beisbol mexicano desde el 2000.
