Los Mochis, Sinaloa. 24 de octubre de 2018 (Andrey Fuentes/Club Cañeros).- La tarde de este miércoles dejó de existir el legendario jugador y ex manager de los Cañeros, Don Benjamín “Papelero” Valenzuela.

Por su gran trayectoria Valenzuela ha sido reconocido en innumerables ocasiones tanto por Cañeros como por otros equipos y organizaciones. En el 2007 los verdes le distinguieron como personalidad en el 45 aniversario de la organización y en 2012 se le nombró “Mejor Manager de los primeros 50 Años de Cañeros”.

El 10 de octubre de 2016 se retiró el número 14 que utilizó en la mayor parte de su carrera, número que desde entonces luce en la barda del Estadio “Emilio Ibarra Almada”, reconociéndolo como inmortal de la organización de los Cañeros de Los Mochis.

Este miércoles 24 de octubre dejó de existir de forma terrenal debido a una insuficiencia renal. A Don Benjamin le sobrevive su esposa la señora Yolanda Gámez y siete hijos.

La directiva del Club Cañeros de Los Mochis encabezada por el Ing. Joaquín Vega Inzunza, el personal administrativo, cuerpo técnico, jugadores, personal de campo y todos los que formamos parte de esta organización, enviamos nuestras sinceras condolencias a la familia Valenzuela García, así como a toda la familia del beisbol mexicano y dedicamos nuestras oraciones por su eterno descanso y una pronta resignación para su familia.

ÍCONO DE LOS CAÑEROS

Nacido el 2 de junio de 1933 en Los Mochis, Benjamín Valenzuela ganó su apodo cuando era niño, “Papelero” le decían, debido a que vendió periódicos para ayudar a su humilde familia.

Su primer “papel” con los Cañeros de Los Mochis fue como batboy pero pronto se integraría al roster de los verdes, cuenta la anécdota que en diciembre del 51, el “Charrascas” Ramírez no pudo atrapar un elevado de rutina en el outfield, eso enfureció al manager Sid Cohen quien de inmediato dio de alta y alineó a un joven Valenzuela de 17 años de edad, dando así por iniciada una carrera llena de logros, llegando a llamar la atención de los scouts de las grandes ligas y consiguiendo debutar en la gran carpa en 1958 vistiendo la casaca de los Cardenales de San Luis.

En 1968 Valenzuela fue llamado a ser coach de los Cañeros bajo el mando de José Luis “Chito” García, los lamentables hechos ocurridos el 2 de octubre en la Ciudad de México obligaron a García a abandonar la nave dejando a los Cañeros a la deriva.

Tras una reunión de emergencia Martín Estrada Jr., Armando Valderrama, Leonardo Félix y otros directivos, acordaron nombrar a Valenzuela como manager y poniendo al cubano Américo Pérez como su brazo derecho. En ese tormentoso inicio de temporada nadie imaginaría que Los Mochis conseguirían su primer título en la pelota invernal.

Fue el 7 de enero de 1969 cuando Los Mochis vencieron 6 por 3 a Hermosillo y explotaban las emociones en la joven ciudad cañera gracias a un equipo con hambre de triunfo que supo sacar lo mejor de sí gracias a la magia de Benjamín “Papelero” Valenzuela.

Papelero siempre se distinguió como un caballero dentro y fuera de los diamantes, vistió con orgullo la casaca de los Cañeros, defendió con valentía la tercera base, manejó con temple e inteligencia y siempre dedicó tiempo para enseñar a los niños nuestro bello deporte.
