WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Justin Verlander lanzó dos entradas el jueves en un juego simulado, en lugar de lo que habría sido su primera apertura programada de la pretemporada.

El cambio de planes se debió a la rigidez que el pitcher de los Houston Astros tiene en la ingle.

“En realidad, mi papá me mandó un mensaje anoche: Una onza de prevención es mejor que una libra de curación”, relató Verlander.

El abridor de los Astros hizo aproximadamente 30 lanzamientos en una loma detrás de los jardines del estadio en el que Houston enfrentó a los Washington Nationals.

“Me sentí tan bien como esperaba sentirme”, recalcó Verlander. “Una vez que subí a la loma, sólo intenté lanzar sin preocuparme mucho (por la dolencia)”.

A Dusty Baker, nuevo manager de los Astros, le gustó lo que vio del actual Cy Young de la Liga Americana. Verlander tuvo marca de 21-6 con efectividad de 2.52 la temporada pasada.

(“(Justin) se vio muy bien. Se vio fino. No estaba contento con algunos de sus pitcheos, pero yo sí”, señaló Baker.

A Verlander, de 37 años, no le gustó su primera entrada de trabajo, pero notó mejoría sustancial en el segundo y consideró extender su labor un inning más, pero recordó el mensaje de su padre.

“Le pregunté a Dusty, ‘Si este fuera un juego oficial, ¿me sacarías?’ y me dijo, ‘Sí. Ya habrías terminado de trabajar’”, relató Verlander. “Entonces le dije, ‘OK. Buen día de trabajo’”.

Rigidez en la ingle no es algo Nuevo para Verlander, pero le había sucedido antes durante la temporada regular.

“Como que ya tengo una idea de cómo mantenerme e intentar evitar algo serio”, dijo el pitcher derecho.

Baker considera que Verlander abrirá el martes próximo en Jupiter, Florida, ante los St. Louis Cardinals, pero el as no quiso asegurarlo hasta ver qué tanto mejora.

Verlander tendrá tiempo de tener al menos cuatro aperturas en el resto de la pretemporada con la posibilidad de tener cinco.

“Si hay mucho en lo que necesito trabajar, no tengo mucho tiempo para corregir, pero si me siento muy bien y mis pitcheos funcionan, entonces, sólo se tratará de crear mi cuenta de lanzamientos”, finalizó Verlander.
