Los organizadores de los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020, pospuestos por la pandemia del coronavirus, dieron a conocer que el evento podría inaugurarse el 23 de julio del 2021, de acuerdo a una información publicada este sábado por el New York Times.
La fuente periodística asegura que esa es la fecha tentativa y la información fue suministrada por autoridades de Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI), que mañana, domingo, van a tener una reunión de urgencia. El portavoz del COI, Mark Adams, consideró el informe como «especulación» cuando el New York Times pidió la versión oficial del asunto.
Pero los máximos dirigentes del COI si tendrán una reunión de emergencia el domingo para discutir la decisión, según el informe y que el portavoz del máximo organismo olímpico no negó.
El COI anunció originalmente que una decisión final sobre una nueva fecha podría tomarse en cuestión de semanas.
El informe del sábado implica que los organizadores tienen la intención de anunciar una decisión mucho antes.
La fecha es casi exactamente un año después de la que inicialmente estaba programada para este año, el 24 de julio y concluyen el 9 de agosto como la ceremonia de clausura.
Después de una protesta abrumadora por parte de los atletas y de los comités organizadores nacionales de todo el mundo, el COI anunció el pasado martes que posponía los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020 a una fecha «a más tardar en el verano de 2021» debido a la pandemia del coronavirus.
En su decisión final, el COI indicó que «en las circunstancias actuales y en base a la información proporcionada por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), el presidente del COI y el primer ministro de Japón, Shinzo Abe, han concluido que los Juegos de la XXXII Olimpiada en Tokio deben reprogramarse para una fecha posterior a 2020, pero no después del verano de 2021, para salvaguardar la salud de los atletas, los involucrados en los Juegos Olímpicos y la comunidad internacional».
El aplazamiento es el primero de su tipo para los Juegos Olímpicos de la era moderna. Los Juego Olímpicos en 1916, 1940 y 1944 fueron cancelados debido a la primera y segunda guerras mundiales, respectivamente.
