Diez ex jugadores de la NFL han sido formalmente acusados de participar en un plan multimillonario para cometer fraude al programa de atención médica de la liga en el que solicitaron reembolsos falsos por equipo médico, incluyendo aparatos usados en caballos, informó el Departamento de Justicia el jueves.

 

Los jugadores fueron acusados en dos imputaciones separadas que fueron presentadas en una corte federal en Kentucky, y en las que se les acusa de conspiración, fraude electrónico y fraude al servicio médico. La fiscalía alega que entregaron cuatro millones de dólares en reclamaciones falsas que llevaron a indemnizaciones de aproximadamente 3,4 millones de dólares entre junio de 2017 y diciembre de 2018.

Entre los acusados se encuentran cinco ex jugadores de los Pieles Rojas de Washington, incluyendo a Clinton Portis y Carlos Rogers.

Los fiscales señalan que los jugadores utilizaron el Plan de Reembolso de Gastos Médicos Gene Upshaw para Jugadores de la NFL, que fue establecido como parte de un acuerdo de negociación colectiva en 2006. El programa ofrece reembolsos libres de impuestos de gastos extras de atención médica que no son cubiertos por el seguro y que fueron realizados por exjugadores, sus esposas y dependientes.

«Como se señala en las imputaciones, un grupo de exjugadores descaradamente defraudó al plan al solicitar reembolsos por costoso equipo médico que nunca compró», indicó el fiscal general asistente Brian Benczkowski, que dirige la división de lo penal del Departamento de Justicia.

Los jugadores aseguraron haber comprado cámaras hiperbáricas, equipos de ultrasonido y aparatos de terapia electromagnética que estaban diseñados para su uso en caballos, detalló Benczkowski.

La fiscalía sostiene que los presuntos cabecillas del grupo, Robert McCune y Cornell Buckhalter, quien al parecer luego se separó a fin de crear su propia red similar, reclutaban a exjugadores ofreciéndoles la entrega de reclamaciones falsas al plan de atención médica.

Los líderes del grupo luego exigirían miles de dólares en sobornos por cada solicitud falsa, de acuerdo con la fiscalía.
